UPDATE: Barrie busted

Update: The WTF Langford editorial board would like to apologize for announcing that Len Barrie was arrested for tax evasion. Apparently, no such thing has happened, and it's a simple misunderstanding with Revenue Canada. (Ha! Of course!) The entire staff of WTF Langford has been fired over this error.

However, we still plan to attend Len's criminal trial, now set for FEBRUARY 19-21, 2013 at 850 Burdett Street, Victoria. That's when Len goes on trial for two counts of Epic Tax Fail. He will be tried separately on FOUR MORE counts in 2014.

  3. LEN BARRIE - TAX EVASION - GIVE YOUR HEAD A SHAKE!! NOT SO.....

If any of these people had done their homework, they would know the CRA issue is with a company called Bear Mountain Projects Ltd. This company is not owned by Len Barrie. It is 100% owned by Bear Mountain Master Partnership. The company has been under the control of the Bear Mountain Master Partnership Chief Restructuring Officer appointed by the bank for the time in question.
Len Barrie is a Director of this company from the days when he did control Bear Mountain Master Partnership. Legally, as he is the only Director, he is the person responsible for making the company, Bear Mountain Projects Ltd., file the two company tax returns that are past due. However, Mr. Barrie no longer controls Bear Mountain Master Partnership and can not make them do anything, including file tax returns for companies they own. Go get the documents from the Victoria Court House to see for yourself. They are public documents. Just don't post the listing with part information, post the document
so that everyone can see what is going on rather than spreading rumours.

  5. @4:08 - check the TC website - they headlined this as a "tax evasion" story, but have now pulled the letter. Further, Postmedia, owner of the TC has pulled the story from its websites, ergo, the TC's story - or the headline at least - was in error. My bet: There will be a retraction on page 2 of the Dec. 14 edition. They could actually end up in court if Barrie chooses to sue them for libel.

  6. Unfortunately for you, an apology and a retraction does not void Barrie's chances of successfully suing you for libel. But fortunately for you, it's not likely he's interested in going after something as small as wtf.

This is the problem with web publishers - they don't understand their legal obligations to print verifiable fact. Apparently, it's also the problem with the TC, in this instance.

  7. It's so easy to give your partner's money away and look like a hero to the public, or give the Trade's money away that you never paid for working on your house. I'm glad he's your hero... he's certainly not mine.

  8. Warning! Libel concerns are forcing us to moderate comments. Any potentially defamatory remarks will be savagely censored by the WTF Langford legal department. Thank you for your cooperation.

  9. Len Barrie may be a giving individual but too many people neglect to see the big picture. Sure he supports childrens hockey and charities and such but everyone involved in big money needs a tax write off. I don't know him personally so maybe he truly does care but there is still a big picture being missed. Is hockey really that important? I support kids playing sports 100% but when your goal becomes playing in the NHL much of a persons development is lost to that. Becoming a professional sports player leads to unbalanced individuals with huge wallets. It becomes dangerous when people become greedy. Len Barrie didn't create Bear Mountain for the benefit of the community, he did it for money, because he could, and to prove a point. Len Barrie has a big ego and the more he was attacked and accused of wrong doings by environmentalists the more he wanted to show them how powerful he was.

Langford is notorious for arguing on the pro-development side of things they claim it creates jobs and it keeps housing prices low. I doubt there are many developers doing what they do for the benefit of fellow man. Too often people like Barrie try to pull something off for quick gains, people warn them, it fails, and everyone has to pick up the pieces. It will never be the same though.

  10. Jebby,

Thank you for your in depth phycological explanation of the mind sets of professional athletes.

How the hell do you know that "when your goal becomes playing in the NHL much of a persons development is lost to that". What a ridiculous statement! Does the same hold true for someone who dedicates their life to being a doctor, an artist, a welder or a scientist? People who succeed in life are often very focused people. Thank God for them because people with little minds, jealous hearts and self righteous attitudes like you seem to have accomplish very little.

By the way, I would expect when the next child, family or group needs financial help to live or even just get by they should probably call on you. Be sure to post a way that they can get a hold of you so you cn open your pocketbook..

  11. It's not tax evasion from Barrie but rather failing to file tax returns by Bear Mountain, which had, at the time, Len Barrie as CEO. Boo F#%$@!*! hoo!. It basically comes down to the same intent, regardless if Berrie hides behind a corporation or not.

  12. John,

What is success though? Is it making millions of dollars? Where does that money come from? Does hockey make the world a better place? Does it matter? I don't claim to have all the answers, everything is a balance and if you do one thing you're probably hurting something else.

I'm obviously generalizing with my statements but there are a lot of sports players who lack any education outside of high school. This isn't a good thing in many cases. Yes they are focused, they definitely work hard, but are they forward thinking? Bear Mountain isn't the only example of hockey players messing with a community. Communities in the Okanagan have been affected by summer mansions that sit empty and residents that don't feed back any money into the community.

A lot of the problem is naivety I don't think it's always intentional. And I'd love to have my mind changed I don't believe my way of thinking is positive or beneficial for me it's just how I see it.

    Thank you for the link.

Correction: The bank is selling Len's house. It went to foreclosure earlier this year, along with all of Len's other properties.
